Residential Surface Studio — Kansas City
Custom metallic and decorative epoxy surfaces for KC homeowners who want their space to feel designed, not just finished.
Our Philosophy
Every metallic epoxy floor Onyx creates is hand-manipulated by the craftsmen who designed it. The pigments are poured, moved, and shaped by human hands. Heat tools shift metallic particles mid-cure. The result is dimensional — depth, movement, and visual complexity that changes with every angle and every light.
No two floors are alike. Not even ones we've done in the same color on the same day. That's not a feature. That's the point.

How It Works
Every Onyx installation begins with a conversation, not a quote. We need to understand what you want your space to say before we talk about how to make it say it.
A 30-minute conversation with Drake or Eli. We assess your space, understand the vision, and tell you honestly whether an Onyx commission is the right fit.
Free — No commitment required
We present a curated material palette specific to your space. Color combinations, finish depth, and effect direction — selected together based on the story you want your space to tell.
Custom to your commission
Diamond grinding, moisture testing, primer, base coat, metallic broadcast, hand manipulation, sealer. Every step done properly. We do not compress the timeline to fit a one-day schedule.
3–5 day standard commission
The moment the space is yours. Every commission includes a floor document naming the finish composition and detailing the full warranty — delivered at completion.

What We Create
Hand-manipulated metallic pigment systems applied in multiple layers. Every commission is unique — pigment movement is guided but never fully controlled, making each floor a first edition.

The Studio
Drake McMillen and Eli started Onyx in 2022 because they saw a market full of contractors applying coatings and calling it craft. They decided to do something different — to operate as a studio, not a service company.
Every commission is installed by us. No subcontractors, no volume compression, no shortcuts on prep. We test moisture on every slab. We grind to proper profile. We allow proper cure time between coats. These aren't selling points — they're the baseline for work we're willing to put our name on.

Not Just Garages
The floor is not a garage decision. It's a home decision. Onyx creates surfaces for every room in the house — from the garage that needed to feel like a showroom to the basement that needed to feel like it was designed.
We've installed metallic epoxy in living rooms, wine cellars, home offices, restaurants, barbershops, and commercial lobbies. If the surface matters to you, it matters to us.
